Palazzo dei Consoli
The townscape is dominated by the massive structure of the Palazzo dei Consoli which is the symbol of Gubbio's medieval power and one of the most beautiful public palaces in Italy. It was built between 1332 and 1337 and nowadays it houses the Civic Museum and the important Picture Gallery, containing works by local painters as well as by Tuscan masters.
Palazzo Ducale
Palazzo Ducale has a very ancient Lombard origin and was restructured at the end of the 15th century. It is an important example of Renaissance architecture - the inner courtyard, built of stones and bricks and the interiors are worth to be seen.
The Basilica of S. Ubaldo
The Basilica of S. Ubaldo is a church, dedicated to St. Ubaldo, bishop and patron Saint of the town. It has a medieval origin and a fine 16th century portal and a delightful Franciscan cloister. The Basilica may be reached either by road or by a cable-car which departures from the centre, near Porta Romana. This is a delightful few minutes' excursion allowing tourists to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the town and the valley below.
The cathedral
This is a Gothic 14th century church with a beautiful Gothic portal decorated with the symbols that represent the Evangelists and the Mystic Lamb. This church contains interesting paintings and a splendid Flemish cope made of golden brocade.
Church of S. Francesco
Church of S. Francesco proudly rises in the Piazza 40 Martiri. Built in Gothic style in the 13th century it has a Gothic portal, a row of hanging arches and a small rose-window coming from the church of S. Francesco in Foligno.
Mausoleum of the 40 martyrs
be sure not to miss visiting the Mausoleum of the 40 martyrs erected in commemoration of the 40 citizens of Gubbio executed by the German Nazi forces on the 22 June 1944.
The Roman Theatre
The Roman Theatre is situated in the lower part of the town and represents a large and well-preserved building. The good restoration allows important cultural events, especially classical theatre performances, to be held in it.
